AKC MEET THE BREEDS®: Boston Terrier

Truly an "All-American" dog, the Boston Terrier is a lively and highly intelligent breed with an excellent disposition. Conveying an impression of determination, strength and activity, he is short-headed and compactly built, and must be black, brindle or seal with white markings.
A Look BackFollowing the Civil War, the Boston Terrier breed was developed in the stables of Boston, Massachusetts, as a fighting dog. An imported dog known as "Hooper's Judge" (sold to a Boston man in 1870) became the ancestor of almost all true modern Boston Terriers.
The breed is an American creation, resulting from a cross between an English Bulldog and a white English Terrier. In 1891, the breed became known as Boston Terriers, taking the name of the city where they originated.

Right Breed for You?The Boston has been nicknamed "the American Gentleman" because of his dapper appearance, characteristically gentle disposition and suitability as companion and house pet. They require only a moderate amount of exercise and a minimum amount of grooming. The breed is easy to train and they are easy keepers, preferring to remain by their owner's sides.

What I love about my dogs:

We have always had a dog in our family, we started out with a Dalmatian, when that didn't work out we got a Lhasa Apso and later a yorkie. My mom was a groomer for 30 years and I worked along side her for about 5 of those years so we were exposed to a lot of different breeds and temperments. Nothing, NOTHING. compares to the Temperament, all over health and {personality} of a Boston terrier. We got our first little girl Cherokee in 1989 and haven't looked back.
-Our little Louie was teased by a neighbor boy once to the point where I would have bitten the kid, but he never even raised his hackles or offered up one warning growl. (don't worry, I didn't let THAT happen again)
-They are not 'yappy' dogs, I only hear them bark when the Bug man comes in the backyard or the doorbell rings.
-The only time we have had to take our dogs to the Vet, was for the occasional C-Section, they are very healthy dogs. They don’t even have plaque build up on their teeth!
-Our dogs are great with children, we got Maggie when my son was a year old, In puppy years she was about the same age and he wasn’t incredibly kind to her, but she was always so sweet with him.
-My Bonnie LOVED to fetch.
-They don’t try to run away if they see an open gate, or when we go camping.
-Incredibly intelligent, show them something once or twice and they pretty much have it.
-They require only a moderate amount of exercise and a minimum amount of grooming. They have no undercoat so they don’t shed an incredible amount either.
-Very affectionate!
I wouldn’t own any other breed. I love them with my whole heart and it makes me sad to see what some people are passing off as a Boston Terrier these days. My puppies are not kenneled, but are very well socialized in my home by my 5 kids who are learning the value of responsibility by helping to care for the pups. (and also the value of a dollar when they are sold) We raise the best quality pups we can, adhering to AKC guidelines. No blue eyes or strange colored coats. Our pups are loved and loving waiting for their forever home. I would very much prefer to NOT ship my pups, other than the fact that I live in Arizona where its hard to find a airline that will ship in the heat, I would prefer you came to pick up your pup to make sure you are getting what you are paying for. I don't mind driving to meet you (within reason) I just want to make sure our babies are safe and going to a good home.

The Terrier Song: :)

Terriers are my very favourite breed.
They're cute and cuddly and easy dogs to feed.
They'll bring you up whenever you are down.
Terriers average 20 pounds.
When I walk around in this terrier town,
One thing that makes me down,
Is when people put bandanas on their dogs.
